older people and scams

Nearly 50% of older people in Northern Ireland are more fearful of crime and falling victim to scams than 2 years ago.

This is according to a study carried out by the Pensioner's Parliament and it comes after a report found that 1 in 4 older people in Northern Ireland have fallen victim to a scam.

Older people with a disability or long term health condition and men were found to be at particular risk to falling victim to scams as are those who live in rural areas. The majority of people were targeted via phone or online.

The Feel Safe project was established 5 years ago by the Age Sector Platform and the Feel Safe Guide has just been updated for 2018. It offers crime and scam prevention advice in addition to contact details for organisations which can help older people feel safe.

You can download your copy of the Feel Safe Guide or if you prefer to have a hard copy this can be obtained by contacting the police on 101 and asking for your local Crime Prevention Officer or by getting in touch with the Policing and Community Safety Partnership (PCSP) in your local council.
